New York Times bestselling author Donna Grant takes you deep inside the Texas rodeo scene in the second book in her Heart of Texas series, Cowboy, Cross My Heart, where danger and desire ride side by side. . .

Naomi Pierce isn’t the type to let a cowboy sweep her off her feet. It’s not her first rodeo, after all. But when she returns to her Texas hometown, she can’t help but be swept up again in the rough-and-tumble world of hard-riding, bronco-busting good-ol’-boys she loved as a girl. She might be here to photograph her Rodeo Queen best friend. But it’s one fine-looking cowboy who really captures her eye…

Brice Harper is all man, all muscle, and all heart. From the moment he rides into the stadium, he can’t help but notice the beautiful stranger with a camera watching him from the stands. It doesn’t take a zoom lens to see the sparks of instant attraction. But things really heat up when he meets Naomi up-close―and he discovers that someone is stalking her friend. Brice wouldn’t be any kind of cowboy if he didn’t offer to help the ladies out. But can the rough rider keep this spirited shutterbug out of danger―without risking his heart?

Quick Review: Heartwarming, sexy, story with excellent characterization and suspense

About the Story

Naomi is back in Texas to visit her friend and her mom. She finds out her friend is being victimized and makes herself a target when she accidentally caught an attacker on film. Brice, a cowboy, comes to her aid when she is attacked. He becomes determined to protect her. The story has all the classic elements of a romantic suspense, but it doesn’t suffer from instalove between the main characters. All of the elements fit together, the plot is tightly constructed, and I didn’t notice any inconsistencies or holes. It’s an easy to follow story, but isn’t overly predictable.

I enjoyed how Donna Grant kept some things secret for a while, revealing the mystery in pieces. It kept me guessing, at least for a while, about who wanted to hurt Naomi and why. And even after I learned some of the who and why, I stayed glued to the pages because I wanted to see the extreme measures they would go to in order to keep their crimes from being found out.

About the Characters

The characterization is the shining star of Cowboy, Cross My Heart. Ms. Grant developed each character with unique personalities and backstories. I felt like I got to know each one of them personally.

The heroine and hero are both likable. Their romance develops at a realistic pace. I appreciated that the author didn’t make the sexual attraction over-the-top and allowed the characters to focus on the dangers they were facing rather than just their lust for one another. I also liked that they didn’t jump right into bed with one another.

The relationships between Brice and his brother, Naomi and her mom, and among other characters added a lot of depth to the story. It’s always more interesting to read about characters who have strong familial ties, because any kind of misunderstanding can have a big impact on their lives.

About the Writing

As I said, the story was easy to follow. The author’s writing style was direct and clean. I have always enjoyed reading Donna Grant books. This one was no exception.

About the Worldbuilding and/or Setting

I felt like I had all the necessary information to be able to visualize the settings. The book contained just enough setting details to make that possible, without getting bogged down by lengthy descriptions.

The only thing I felt didn’t quite meet my expectations for world development was the police involvement, rather the lack thereof. The sheriff comes into the story much later than seemed believable. For me to have found this to be realistic, the author would have had to set it up with some sort of explanation of why this particular law enforcement agency didn’t investigate attacks or interview the victims of those attacks.

Do I Recommend?

I absolutely recommend Cowboy, Cross My Heart to readers of romantic suspense, particularly readers who like books about Texans, cowboys, or rodeos. The book contains an excellent balance of romance and danger. There was also sufficient mystery to keep me guessing about who wanted to hurt the women and why. It’s sexy, dangerous, and heartwarming, sometimes simultaneously, which makes for an interesting read from start to finish.

My Rating:  5 out of 5 stars (A)
