Author Interview: Kristen Middleton

We’re very excited to share with you an exclusive interview with author Kristen Middleton!

She writes young adult, fantasy, paranormal romance, bad boy romance, and more. Thank you so much, Kristen, for taking the time to answer our questions!

What was the biggest challenge you encountered while writing or publishing?

Finishing my first story, which was Zombie Games, Origins. I’d written the first chapter and kept questioning and revising every line. I actually sat on the first few pages for months, wanting everything perfect. I then read some advice about typing out one’s story without looking back, and then cleaning everything up once finished. The author mentioned that she thought of her first draft as ‘vomit’ and how it was so much easier to write and clean up the mess afterward. This is what finally worked for me and three months later, I finished my first story.

Do you have a writing routine or schedule?

I probably should, but I don’t. I’m a fulltime writer and I am in and out of my office all day and night.

If you could bring one of your characters to life, from any of your books, who would it be and why?

Carissa Jones, my psychic investigator. I am obsessed with the supernatural. Back when I was pregnant with my second child, I went with friends to a psychic for fun. A woman named Ruth Lordan (the same woman who gave our Viking’s coach Mike Zimmer a crystal ball last year and now they’re doing better than ever). She knew things that she shouldn’t haven and it was pretty shocking. I feel like she influenced the course of my life because she told me that I would have a very successful career. One that would have me traveling and carrying around a book. At the time, I was selling furniture so it surprised me. I loved to read but had no idea of what she was talking about. I hadn’t been aware of self-publishing at the time, so it didn’t make a whole lot of sense. But, her words stuck with me and gave me drive. Here I am ten years later. I’ve published over 38 books and am in a place I never dreamed possible.

What do you like most about writing paranormal fiction?

I love the freedom that it gives me to use my imagination.

Do you plan to make PAXTON VS. THE UNDEAD into a series? If so, is there an estimated date for the next book?

Paxton VS The Undead is actually derived from my Zombie Games series. There are five books in that particular one. I do plan on writing another book about Paxton, however. I just don’t have a date because I’m involved with so many other projects right now.

What will your next release be?

I also write under the pen name of Cassie Alexandra and am currently working on a story with author Candi Heart. It’s called Sweet Treats and will be releasing February 14th.

Have you ever had self-doubt, procrastination issues, or writer’s block? If so, how did you overcome it?

Procrastination is a big issue that I have. Fortunately, I’ve found that creating pre-orders for my books has helped me complete my projects more effectively. Without them, I definitely waste too much time on social media and the internet in general.

As far as self-doubt, I think most writers have it. We’re all worried our books aren’t as good as we think they are, or that they’re worthy of great reviews. Admittedly, it gets easier with each book published. You learn what the majority of your readers want and what they don’t want. It’s an ongoing learning experience for me.

As far as writer’s block, I do get that sometimes. Going for walks usually helps. While I’m working on a book, however, I need silence. I can’t even have music playing or it’s too distracting unfortunately. Honestly, though, I never know where my books are heading. I have an idea of where I want to start and finish, but the stuff in between is often a mystery to me.
