Reckoning – Jeaniene Frost [Short Story Review]

“Reckoning” is a paranormal romance short story, written by Jeaniene Frost. It is a prequel to the Night Huntress series.

This short story was published in 2oo9 in the Unbound anthology by Eos. It was republished as a separate ebook since then (no longer available on Amazon), but I read it in the paperback anthology.

Although I would normally place the Night Huntress series in the paranormal romance genre, this particular story felt more like urban fantasy.

Blurb for “Reckoning”

UnboundIn New Orleans, a pair of undead ghoul serial killers is about to turn Mardi Gras into a horror show – unless the immortal hitman Bones can hunt them down first. Can he avoid redhaired vampire mercenary in pursuit at the same time? From anthology Unbound.

Jen’s Review of “Reckoning”

(This review was first posted on Books That Hook. I’ve updated and added to it some for this post.)

In this story, Bones is in New Orleans because he believes he his assistance is needed in solving a string of gruesome murders. He is under the impression that the Queen of New Orleans (a voodoo priestess) wants him to stop the killer, a ghoul named Delphine.

In a lot of ways, I enjoyed “Reckoning” more than the first book in this series, Halfway to the Grave. I think part of the reason for that is because I’ve always liked Bones more than Cat.

I really liked this story because it’s an opportunity to see Bones in action without being bogged down by sex scenes. It’s a quick, fast-paced, read. The setting and atmosphere is great, as well is the bits of history added into the story. For a short story, I felt this was developed very well in all areas like characters, setting, worldbuilding, plot, etc..

As long as you’re the type who can stomach ghouls eating the limbs off of live victims, you’d probably enjoy this story. I liked it a lot. It’s one I would read again.

My Rating:  5 out of 5 stars (A)
